If so you are in a large majority, you would be extremely hard pushed to find someone who hasn't been affected by delays or canceled flights at one time or another. Of course not all flight cancellations or delays can be avoided as some are out of human hands.

Some delays or cancellations can be down to sheer bad luck when it comes to Mother Nature. Bad weather is a huge problem where flights are concerned and for safety reasons flights are either delayed until it clears or cancelled for another time. Traffic control errors or problems can also be a factor when flights are either cancelled or delayed. Mechanical repairs or problems could also be another cause.
The majority of good airlines will do everything they can to find you another flight either with another airline or with them at a later date. There should be no other charges for this if the delay or the cancellation is out of your hands. If you find your own flight on a different airline your old airline may pay any fees but they are not at liberty to do so.

Every airline will have its own special policies when passengers are delayed. Some people think that airlines have to provide meals, shelter or phone calls but in actual fact they don't have to do any of these things. Some airlines have different rules and regulations regarding cancellations and delays so it is always best to check them before you travel anywhere.

For the majority of airlines that operate in and around the United States, they will have different treatment for different fare types. Many airlines actually book more people onto their flights than there are seats; this is in the event of any no shows for that particular flight. If there are no 'no shows' then you may be the unfortunate one to get taken off the flight you booked for. To help avoid this, arrive at check in as early as possible. The Department of Transportation has a requirement for the airlines to have to ask people to give up their booked seats on a voluntary basis. This will be in return for some such compensation. Your compensation may be free travel, lodgings, money etc.

You are protected by Federal rules if you are the chosen on so to speak! The airline has to give you a specially written statement that states all of your rights as a traveler. If your booked airline cannot make sure you get to your actual destination within at least one hour of your original destination arrival time, you might just be able to get an on the spot payment for your troubles.

When you are reserving flights or booking hotel rooms always look at the terms and conditions in case you have to cancel or reschedule. This is very important information so be sure to print it out.
Always read the conditions of carriage section that is on every airlines website as this holds some very important information.
