Getting the Most Out of Google AdSense - Which Ad Units Should You Use?

One of the issues you face when developing a commercial web site is how to make money out of it. If you sell products via the site then that's obviously how you intend to make your money. If it's a site that serves up mainly content though, making money out of the site is not so straight forward. Potential advertisers will probably only be interested in placing paid-for ads on your site if you are getting a lot of traffic, but for a new site this is rarely going to be the case.

Google AdSense provides an easy no cost, no risk solution, although it must be stressed that you won't make much money through AdSense unless your site is attracting a significant amount of traffic. It's a gradual process though, and there is something satisfying about earning a few dollars, or even a few cents, while you're asleep!

In this article we'll take a look at the types of ad units that, in general, attract the most click throughs.

Leaderboards

Leaderboards can be very effective placed at the top of the page, close to the site's navigation bar, or sometimes between forum entries.

Half Banners

Half Banners work great slotted into articles or blogs. I tend to put them mid-way through, or at the end of, an article.

Skyscraper

Put skyscrapers down the right hand side of the page rather than the left.

Big Ad Blocks / Rectangles

Place rectangles of ads in tables and imbed them into the content on the page. This way the content of the page flows around the ads so that they look like they're part of the normal content on the page.

Text Ads

Text ads almost always perform better than image ads. Image ads tend to look more like adverts, and consequently visitors don't click them.

In conclusion, try to make your ads look like normal page content. People don't like clicking on adverts, so try to make your AdSense ad units look as little like adverts as possible. And experiment. Try different types of ads in different places to see what works for your site(s).

How to Have Your Imagination Support You

To become great in the field of business or any other field, the concentrated use of the imagination is required. To be able to benefit from this extra-ordinary capacity which we all possess, we need to fully understand and then develop the imagination.

Napoleon Hill in his classic book, Think and Grow Rich, explains the two proficiencies of imagination, namely the synthetic, and creative imaginations. It becomes important to know exactly how each faculty works and learn that one is largely a component of the left-brain hemisphere and one a component of the right-brain hemisphere as is outlined by Denis Waitley in Seeds of Greatness.

Scientists today agree that the functions of the brain cannot be simply compartmentalised as right- or left - brain.

As business people, we are so adept in operating from the left hemisphere (the logical, analytical side of the brain, that we may be in danger of under utilising the right hemisphere (intuitive, creative). To have the imagination fully support us we need to be whole brain thinkers.

Synthetic Imagination

This particular inherent power of the mind, merely arranges prior knowledge: conceprs, ideas or plans into new combinations. It works with the material of experience, education and observation, with which it is fed. It is used by inventors whereas the genius draws upon the Creative imagination when it cannot solve problems through the Synthetic imagination.

Creative Imagination

The Creative imagination is the faculty through which "hunches" and "inspiration" are received. It works automatically when the conscious mind is working at an exceedingly rapid rate and when it is stimulated through the emotion of strong desire. This creative faculty becomes more alert in proportion to its development through use. Leaders in business, industry, finance as well as great artists, musicians, poets and writers became great because they used creative imagination.

How to master your own creativity

All you and I need to do to unlock our creativity and gain maximum benefit from our imaginations is to be "whole- brain" thinkers. Thousands of years ago we were more emotional and intuitive, but as we learned how to use tools and to verbally communicate, we altered our state. We developed into a "left-brain" society utilising verbalism, logic and practical problem solving. To become adept in the expansion of the whol imagination and particularly the Creative imagination, the key is in fostering right-brain function - our intuition and our spontaneous feelings. Then we will be more rounded in our approach to life and business and gain the added benefit which only the Creative imagination can bring.
